Former State Sen. Kurt Schaefer has years of experience in Missouri government that he brings to his law practice and to his work for his firm’s government affairs subsidiary, Lathrop GPM Consulting.

After joining Lathrop in 2007, Schaefer was elected as a Republican state senator for a Columbia-based district in 2008. He served two terms, including an unprecedented six years as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which helps craft the state’s $27 billion budget.

Schaefer has been a special criminal prosecutor for the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and a special assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri.

He also was general counsel and deputy director for the Missouri DNR, where he helped negotiate a more than $170 million settlement with AmerenUE after the utility’s dam failed and flooded Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.

Schaefer earned his law degree in 1995 from Vermont Law School.
